British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
